Winter on Junction Hill

The Cottage has always been a place of retreat, a casual get-away from the pressures and routines of daily life.

Across a pastoral meadow and beyond the Edwards' Farm, Madonna Mountain and Smugglers' Notch form the rolling horizon seen from the cottage property. Mt. Mansfield in all of its majesty sits just off to the right. It's no wonder that John and Elizabeth Colby of Boston originally built the cottage here in 1947, to serve as their summer camp. In 1963 the property was purchased by the Robert Orth family of Burlington, Vermont. They winterized it for year 'round use and retained ownership through the spring of 1988. In June of that year, Theodore F. [Ted] Kuhar of Clinton, New Jersey, acquired the property for his personal use as a summer residence.

In 1994, Ted retired and moved to Vermont full-time. A year later, in 1995, he built an attached, fully contained post-and-beam addition. After settling into his new home, the cottage became available to Vermont tourists in 1996.

If you are looking for elegant lodging, then we must frankly admit - you need to continue your search. [We'll be happy to give you some direction if you contact us.] The cottage remains today as it always has been, a casual, welcoming, camp-style retreat full of comfortable charm. As such, it is stocked with almost everything you could possibly want in a home-away-from-home atmosphere. You may even discover a pint of Ben and Jerry's tucked away in the freezer when you arrive.

And if you do choose to stay somewhere else in this locale, please stop by and visit the cottage. We'll proudly show you around. We're happy to say that we've even met a few new guests this way.

In July, the full moon rises directly over the distant mountain peak, like a big cherry on a sundae.
